Magura, the company behind the MT 6 and MT 8 hydraulic brakes are recalling them because they “can fail in low temperatures,” according to a post on the Consumer Product Safety Commission.
We recommend that you stop using these products with immediate effect. In the few cases where we have experienced this fault it is apparent that a loss of brake pressure can occur when the brake is exposed to very cold temperatures. The safety of our customers is our primary concern and any potential risk to the user due to quality issues, as in this case, leads to an immediate corrective action. . . MT 6 and MT 8 brake systems with manufacture date codes between March 1, 2011 and May 31, 2012 are being recalled. A date code in format Y/MM/DD between 10301 and 20531 is located on the caliper. Additionally, all MT 6 and MT 8 brake systems without date codes are being recalled.
Better get those in, if you’re running them.

We’re rarely interested in anything to do with BMX, however, when BMX design legend Bob Haro talks it’s difficult for us not to listen, even if he’s talking to a local newspaper reporter for The Coast News. What’s he talking about? His limited edition 540 re-release of his original BMX freestyle bike designs under his new label Ikonix.
“IKONIX will be an iteration of the original bike, integrating technology to meet the needs of today’s hot, young riders,” he said, adding that the product line will include freestyle BMX bikes, racing bikes and BMX parts, accessories and apparel. . . “We are working with young riders who can give us input on the product,” he explained. “It is a definitely a collaborative brand that harnesses creative knowledge and expertise. The products are designed at my office in Cardiff and engineered and prototyped in San Diego. My goal is to make as many of them in the United States, preferably Southern California, because it’s the right thing to do.”
Yes it is. And the bikes will reportedly be dropping in September 2013. Watch for it.

On April 7, 2013 the twisted cycling minds at Spy Optic are rolling out their “Hell Of The North County” Belgian Waffle Ride for the second year in a row. The 200k race features 10,000 vertical feet of knee blasting climbs, dirt roads, creek fordings, river crossings, bone jarring descents while winding its way through San Diego, California’s beautiful, yet perilous North County region.
Here’s how event founder and Spy President and CEO Michael Marckx describes it.
“Belgium has been for a century the epicenter of international professional cycling in the early spring race season, and the SPY Belgian Waffle Ride is an homage to the storied history and folklore of bike racing in that region, a tribute to the incredibly arduous competitions staged there, and a celebration of our cycling heritage as a brand,” Marckx says. “With some similar terrain to Belgium that North County offers, we’ve done our best to emulate the race experiences of rural Ghent, Wevelgem, Flanders, Liege and Bastogne, with wearisome rolling hills, steep climbs, gravel and dirt roads, water crossings and a distance that few racers will ever contend with in the United States. We’ve also baked-in a fun Belgian breakfast and dinner, a whole lot of twists in the way of awards, and there’s a great foundation (CAF) that we’re excited to support through donations this year.”
So at least there’s a good cause for all this pain. For the official word from Spy, follow the jump. [click to continue…]

Looking for a brand newish original Chiementin-Cinelli Pista? How about a Masi 3V Volumetrica? Look no more. The crafts people (family) at Treasure Cycles have rebuilt these classic bikes and are now selling them on their website.
Once again, instinct and passion took over, and one frame at a time, one bike at a time, slowly at first and then very rapidly we started collecting a PK Ripper bike here, a Ciocc frame there, and finally some time later deciding that the cycling bug never really did leave us after all. And in this brave new world of Internet and treasure hunting and collecting, what better way to combine the two than to allow one to feed the passion of the other.
The bikes aren’t cheap. The Pista is currently listed at $5,750 and the Masi is $5,685, but they certainly are fun to look at.

In its Bicycle Components segment, sales in the nine months increased 13.6 percent ¥146.2 billion and operating income increased 40.6 percent to ¥29.8 billion. Shimano said in Europe, a major market for Shimano products, retail sales remained at virtually the same level as for the corresponding period of the previous year, thanks to the warm weather from late July onward “despite sluggish business in the spring when the weather was unsettled.”

After deciding that traveling by car pretty much beats flying with bikes each and every time, we discovered Spinlister.com DoLiquid.com and started to rethink our travel plans.
Liquid, based in San Francisco, California, is an online “marketplace that lets you find the best bikes to rent online, whether from individuals or existing bike rental shops.” It also lets anyone with a bike rent it out. Not a bad idea really.
Now, rather than spending $400 on a bike bag and paying $150 each way to fly bikes around, we may just check in with Liquid and rent one when we get there. However, we doubt we’ll be renting David Tsee’s Scattante r570 Road Bike for $110 a day, although $170 for the week doesn’t sound too bad.
Check it out. The more people who sign up, the better it will be for everyone who travels and rides.
[Editors’ Note: Two days after we posted this Spinlister changed their name to Liquid. We’ve made corrections to update this post.]
