The battle for your active wrist heated up a little today as Suunto announced that they’ve added a barometer to their Spartan Sport Wrist HR GPS multisport watch. The Spartan Sport, which competes directly with Garmin’s fenix line of watches, also got a battery life bump. We’d still choose the fenix given the choice, however it’s good to see that Suunto hasn’t given up the fight yet. For cyclists who’ve had enough of Garmin this watch is a good choice. Ultraendurance riders (those who aren’t making a $200 Grinduro run) are gathering in Verdi, Nevada on October 7, 2017 for the start of the 400 mile Trans North California self-supported, mostly dirt race across the state to the coast (Mendocino California).
This one hundred percent, self-supported adventure is for those who have the skills to handle any issues that will arise while attempting to orient this route. There are no prizes, no entry fee, no medals, no trophies, no promises, no warranty, no sponsors, no fanfare, no expectations, no liability, no one in charge, and no one but you.

Thanks to the ongoing Eagle Creek Fire near the Columbia River Gorge there are loads of mountain bike trails shutdown until further notice, however, the US Forest Service, Oregon and Washington State Parks, and the Columbia River Gorge Commission would like everyone to know that there are still trails that are open for mountain biking. In one more bit of evidence that fatamerica is winning, Yamaha is dropping e-bikes on us at Interbike according to a press release posted on VitalMTB.com.
Yamaha Motor Company, Ltd. (YMC) launched the world’s first electrically power assisted bicycle in 1993 and has since produced more than 4 million drive units and sold over 2 million Yamaha power assist bicycles. YMC supplies class-leading e-Bike Systems to select OEM partners worldwide.
In other words, this isn’t their first rodeo. But don’t be fooled. E-bikes are just another problem, not a solution for anything other than the possibility of safer Supercross. Just think how much safer Supercross would be if the riders were forced to ride 55 pound e-bikes. . .

Oakley has always made great performance eyewear for doing almost anything, but in cycling eyewear was about as far as they went. Today that’s changed as the company announced full “head-to-ankle” coverage for cyclists. The new line includes kits, socks, gloves and a complete line of boss looking helmets including this AERO5 Redline featuring MIPS technology.

We never can pass up a good SoCal masters cycling doping story and this one is great because it’s everyone’s second time around. . . deja vu.
Back in 2007 Upland, California road racer Kayle LeoGrande, 40, was pinged for using EPO while racing in The Point Premium Root Beer International Cycling Classic. For this rule violation LeoGrande was given a two-year suspension.
Now, 10 years later, LeoGrande was tested following his win in the 35+ race at The 2017 Dana Point Grand Prix and according to the USA Cycling his urine ratted out a pharmacy of banned substances including: raloxifene, ostarine, ibutamoren, GW1516 sulfone, RAD140, LGD4033, and andarine. Because of this he was given an 8-year suspension. But hey, he’s only 40 and eight years gives him plenty of time to train for another national crit title in 2025, right? He can come back again, for sure.
