Loud Ass Bike Horn Stops Cars

by editors on December 12, 2012

Our loud whistle works pretty well to get the attention of most drivers, but not everyone has a whistle that will shatter glass. And for those people, Loud Bicycle horn may be just the thing.

Sound: is like a typical car horn, both in volume and pitch
Honk: for up to 30 seconds at a time (but please be respectful)
Batteries: are rechargeable Li-ion batteries that will last 1-2 months
Button: snaps on to either handlebar and honking does not interfere
with braking.
Weather resistant: works in rain, sleet and snow

Its makers are currently seeking funding on Kickstarter. They’re hoping to get $43,000 and with 31 days to go they’ve already raised $14k. If you’d like to help them out, click here.

Traffic Fatalities Down, Cyclist Deaths Up

by editors on December 12, 2012

From a cyclist standpoint there is no good news in the report that traffic fatalities have dropped to their lowest point since 1949, because, as we all know cyclist deaths are up, according a story in The Dallas Morning News.

Bicyclist deaths jumped 8.7 percent and deaths of occupants of large trucks increased 20 percent, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said in an analysis of 2011 traffic deaths. . . Overall traffic fatalities dropped 1.9 percent, to 32,367. The decline came as the number of miles driven by motorists dropped by 1.2 percent. . . The increase in bicycle deaths probably reflects more people riding bicycles to work and for pleasure, said Jonathan Adkins, deputy executive director of the Governors Highway Safety Association, which represents state highway safety agencies.

We need two things: cyclist need ride safe and drivers who hit cyclists need to get more than a ticket.

The Electric Crotch Rocket Bicycle

What bike goes 80 MPH and can go 200 miles on a single charge and can be pedaled like the “bicycle” it is after the battery dies? It’s the Handebrink X-5, according to a story in Wired.

The 120-pound bike has a dual suspension monocoque chassis build out of aircraft-grade aluminum tubing. The suspension has 177 mm of travel to keep the ride smooth, while Avid hydraulic front brakes and rear Brembo four-piston brakes bring it to a stop. Hanebrink says, “Optional adjustable offset triple clamp forks allow the rider to adjust for corner entry reaction from very quick to very stable, or anywhere in between.”. . . When the juice runs out, use a coin to turn the fasteners and pop out the pedals from behind the fairings to go on human power.

The only problem? The thing costs $16,940, however, if you’d like to buy us one for Christmas we’ll take it.

86-year-old Paper Boy Stoked On Bikes

by editors on December 5, 2012

Adams, Minnesota’s Bud Shaefer is 86 years old and he is still delivering newspapers while in the saddle of his favorite bike. Reminds us of back in the day when papers weren’t delivered by a homeless man in a 1974 Ford Pinto with no muffler.

Hitler Plans A Group Ride

by editors on December 3, 2012

This Hitler clip is old and tiring and beat, but we just can’t stop laughing at all the clever ways everyone has jacked it up. Our laughter today comes on the heels of a “slow Sunday” group ride in which several KOMs were nailed down by the leaders. So, yeah, we found this one funny.

Greg LeMond & The Rapha Continental

by editors on November 15, 2012

The one and only time we interviewed Greg LeMond he was recovering from a turkey hunting accident. He wasn’t back on his bike yet. Ever since then we’ve wished we could just roll with him for a minute or too. But then, seriously, who hasn’t dreamed of rolling out of Carson City, Nevada and taking a spin up Monitor Pass with Greg LeMond? The Rapha crew did and they made a video. Nice of them.

Another Audi vs. Cyclist

by editors on November 15, 2012

What is it with Audi’s and assholes? Just last week we posted a video of an Audi driver purposefully trying to run a cyclist into the curb and now this from Mt. Prospect, Illinois and the Journal-Topics.

A Des Plaines man told Mt. Prospect police that he was riding on Busse Avenue at 7:08 p.m. Nov. 7 as he approached Albert Street. The bicyclist had head and tail lights on his bike, according to the police report. . . As he started to cross Albert, a Mt. Prospect man in an Audi allegedly disobeyed the stop sign and nearly struck the man on the bike. The bicyclist threw a cup of coffee at the man in the Audi in frustration, he told police. . . The Mt. Prospect man got out of the Audi and confronted the bicyclist, but retreated to his vehicle when he realized the other man was larger, according to the police report.

The two men then both called the police and waited for them to arrive. When they did, they did nothing and told both me to leave the scene. And we thought the biggest dicks on the road were behind the wheels of Ford F-150s.
