The news from Sea Otter 2019 has been storming in for hours, but here’s something we’ve been waiting for. Tasco today announced the release of their new Recon Ultralite gloves. Here’s what they’re saying about it.

SoCal mountain bikers will get a rare opportunity to ride North County San Diego’s historic Rancho Guejito as the San Diego Mountain Biking Association hosts their Ride the Rancho fund raiser on Saturday, February 23, 2019.
This is also the first ever cycling event at Rancho Guejito, a 23,000 acre working ranch in the Escondido Area. There will be a fully guided 15-mile, social paced ride suitable for MTB’s or Gravel bikes. The ride, with around 1000 feet of elevation gain, will follow ranch roads through pastures and past ancient oaks, up shaded valleys, and will include rest stops at two historic points of interest including the Maxcy Winery (est.1850’s) and other adobe ruins. . . This adventure will be followed by a delicious catered BBQ by Bar None BBQ and will feature Rancho Guejito Vineyard wines and Rouleur Brewing Company beer. Live music and lots of Old California hospitality included! Tickets are $110 with proceeds going to support SDMBA trail projects and advocacy efforts.

When the Garmin HRM Run strap that came with our fenix 5 watch finally failed, we went back to the first heart rate strap that we’d ever worn and it reminded us how nice it is to have something that feels good, and works. Here are a few of the reasons we’re happy to have returned to Wahoo.
- Soft, velvety elastic strap that is snug without being too tight.
- Front snap closure. Know how cool front closure bras are? How easy they are to open and close? That’s how nice it is using Wahoo’s front snap closure. It connects the circuit and straps it up all at once. No fiddling with a side clip and then sliding into place. No label that’s constantly folded over and scratching up your ribs.
- Bluetooth and ANT+ connectivity. This HRM will connect to nearly everything — watches, phones, bike computers…and really what else is there. Use it on the bike with a Garmin 520 for a ride and then pair it up with a smartphone for jogs and hikes. It really is that easy.
- Flashing lights to let you know it’s on. This may not seem that important but once something goes wrong it can be difficult to figure out who is to blame in the Bluetooth or ANT+ circle jerk. When the battery is dead the lights won’t flash. Duh. Simple but effective.
- Price. Who can complain about $50 bucks. Sure, it doesn’t have built in stride metrics, but who runs anyway and if you do, well, maybe you need a different strap.

As if bicycle retailing in general can get any worse Emerald Expositions, owners of among other things the Interbike and Outdoor Retailer trade shows announced on December 6, 2018 that they were canning the 2019 Interbike show in Reno.
Instead, the company will research alternative plans for 2020 and beyond, including the opportunity to launch events featuring bicycling and bike-related components within or alongside its various successful, multi-sport trade show franchises.
In other words, until Emerald Expositions figures out how to save their flagging business all bets are off. Likely, Interbike will be thrown in with one of the Outdoor Retailer/SIA Snow Shows in Denver, Colorado. This on the heels of their President and CEO David Loechner announcing a rather immediate departure from the company on November 1, 2018 doesn’t seem suggest that bright a future for the company nor trade shows in general. It’s funny to think of Garmin’s new Instinct GPS adventure watch as “affordable” when it weighs in at $299, however compared the $799 fenix 5+ it’s a downright bargain. The Instinct, which comes in three colors (Graphite, Tundra and Flame Red) is bursting with G-shock flavor and features a new fiber reinforced polymer case shape that visually differentiates it from the fenix while still keeping the familiar five-button layout. It doesn’t have built-in mapping, music storage, or Garmin Pay like its big brother, but it will handle the cycling, running, hiking, and swimming (not that any of us swim) tracking just fine: cadence and speed with sensors (ANT+ or bluetooth) sure, power, nope. Held in Burke, Vermont the Rasputitsa Spring Classic on April 21, 2018 has 1,300 riders registered and will likely be the hard, cold gravel race’s muddiest event yet.
“It’s exciting to see how much the Rasputitsa Spring Classic has grown and the camaraderie of bringing these riders together, “says event co-founder Anthony Moccia. “Rasputitsa has been a very successful effort to unite cyclists, bring economic opportunity to a remote area of Vermont, and give back to growing the sport of cycling with every dollar we profit.” . . . Rasputitsa 2018 will also see pro cyclists including Allison Tetrick, Tim Johnson, Ted King, Jeremy Power, Anthony Clark, and Lyne Bessette compete in the race. Sponsors for this year’s race include Specialized Bicycles, Garneau, Clif Bar, Woodchuck Hard Cider, Julbo, Colavita, Bialetti, and more.

Registration for the 7th Annual Canyon Belgian Waffle Ride opens at 12:00am PST on Friday, December 1, 2017. Hard to believe, but it’s time to get your 2018 spring season kicked off right.
