2017 BWR Registration Now Open

by editors on November 30, 2016

bwr2017grass

Big, fancy, famous, gravel grinding, dirt churning, road racing suffer fests like North County San Diego California’s 2017 Cervélo Belgian Waffle Ride tend to sell out early for some reason and that’s why we’re reminding you that registration for the 2017 event (scheduled for Sunday May 21, 2017) is now open. Click here to register before you read the rest, if you must.

What’s up for the 2017 event? Here are a few details from the organizers:

The course will change a bit this year and not be quite as long. Yes, you read that correctly. As with all spring classics, sometimes the courses change for the better. We know ours is.

There is a new team category being added to the event for both the Waffle and Wafer. You will be able to race with your teammates against other teams in Male, Female and Co-Ed classifications.  The cumulative time of the top four finishers from each team  will determine the placings.

This will be the most festive and interesting event to date. We have many new fun and exciting features to roll out for everyone this year, on a more manageable course, with a stacked field of riders from all over the world.

We are very pleased to share all of this with you in May.

Danke,

We’ll keep you posted as more info becomes available and remember, it’s never too early to start training for the BWR.

Ottolock: The Smart, Light Bike Lock

by editors on September 12, 2016

We weren’t the biggest fans of Otto Designs smartphone based rear derailleur tuner (reviewed here on DigitalTrends.com), but their new product, the Ottolock looks like a really smart way to secure a bike when you have to leave it for a short time (to get coffee, or run into a store for milk). We haven’t tested it, but it definitely looks like a step in the right direction. It’s light, doesn’t require a key, and can easily wrap around more than one bike. What more do you need?

If you’d like one, click the link to help them out on Kickstarter.

The WTB Riddler Goes To 45 Wide

by editors on September 1, 2016

wtb_riddler45

Looking for the perfect shoes for your gravel/CX steed? WTB might have just the tire for you with their Riddler 45c.

Expanding what gravel can do while happily accommodating dirt touring, the Riddler 45c corners with confidence on hard surfaces while still sinking its teeth deep into your favorite trails. It encourages exploration…through dirt, gravel, smiles, frowns, blood, sweat and tears. . . . Built for unfaltering speed through a wide range of conditions, the Riddler 45c delivers added gusto to the rider who finds themselves on the roughest of roads. Incredibly versatile in a what-can‘t-it-do type of size, this tire breathes capability when mounted to any drop bar bike.

It may be a little wide for CX racers who like to abide by UCI rules, but for everyone else, it look pretty sweet. The Riddler 45c’s are available at the WTB website. Click the link for more info.

The Lost Sierra Triple Crown Rolls Out

by editors on June 2, 2016

lostsierra3c

We hesitate to give The Lost Sierra Triple Crown grinder series any play, because truthfully, we like keeping our corner of NorCal free from the ravages of bike over population, but sometimes a series is just too good to keep quiet about. And this is one of them.

The Lost Sierra Triple Crown is made up of three events. The first event, Lost & Found, rolls out this Saturday (June 4, 2016) from Lake Davis, California. According to organizers the Lost & Found course “features a perfect blend of pavement, dirt road, gravel road and historic railroad grade with 100 miles, 7,000 feet of climbing, and is 80 percent dirt. The second is the world famous Downieville Classic in August 6, 2016, and the third (and one you should not miss) is the Grinduro in Quincy, California on October 8, 2016.

These events take place on some of the most amazingly beautiful remote pavement, gravel, and singletrack that you will find anywhere in the world. We’d say more, but we’ll just leave it at this. . . from one of our undisclosed rides last summer.

2016 Belgian Waffle Ride Results

As hardmen and women by the hundreds struggled across the finished line on Sunday afternoon, April 24, 2016, it was obvious that the 5th Annual Belgian Waffle Ride was the toughest yet. With 146 miles of body pounding, mind bending terrain (including 41 miles of dirt and 13,000 feet of climbing) it is no wonder that this year’s event was won by Jelly Belly’s Josh Berry, a professional cyclist with experience from some real Belgian classics.

“I’d heard about the BWR, but it was even better than I expected,” said Berry, professional cyclist for team Jelly Belly p/b Maxxis. “These events are for the riders, and it’s great to have challenging rides where just finishing is an accomplishment. Not everyone can go race in Europe, and this gives people in North America a taste of something hard, but available to everyone. The mix of dirt and hills really suited me and made for a super fun day out there. I hope to be back next year.”

On the women’s side international cyclo-cross star, Amanda “Panda” Nauman (pictured above) dominated the field to beat defending women’s champion Rhonda Quick by just over 12 minutes.

For more details from the ride (and complete waffle results), please follow the jump.
