by editors on October 4, 2013

There’s more to cycling than any of us know and Larry Smith aware of this more than most. Smith suffers from Parkinsons and is the star of a feature length documentary, Ride With Larry. In the film Smith rides his bike 300 miles across South Dakota to help educate people about Parkinsons and let them know that living is better than anything. It is the moving story of cycling keeping someone going when most others would stop. To see the official trailer for the film, follow the jump.

People For Bikes: Gorilla In The Room

On the eve of the day that news of American cyclocross racer Amy Dombroski’s death spread through the cycling world Tim Blumenthal, the president of People For Bikes wrote this compelling piece for the organization’s website.

In the pre-digital age, I would have been described as a broken record. That’s because every day, at least a half dozen times, I repeat the phrase, “When people ride bikes, great things happen.” I say it in media interviews, sponsor pitches, and in pep talks during staff meetings here at PeopleForBikes headquarters. . . This simple sentence neatly summarizes all the health, air quality, road congestion, business, and money-saving benefits of riding bikes. It helps explain why our organization exists. It’s a pure reflection of the smile in our red, white and blue logo. . . But the truth is, not all outcomes of bicycling are positive. Far too many bike riders get injured (or worse) worldwide.

Do yourself a favor and read the rest (if you haven’t already). It presents the situation we’re all in and beautifully explains the challenges ahead and what we all can do to surmount them.

2013 SoCalCross Prestige Series #1 Edit

by editors on October 3, 2013

It’s Thursday, four whole days after the SoCalCross Prestige Series Opener in Donwtown Los Angeles’ Historic Park and there are still no official results posted anywhere. Organization was pathetic. They ran out of timing chips and race numbers and racers were forced to lobby for their finishing places, but don’t let that keep you from checking out this video from the first two laps of the open category posted by J. Weir. Yes, he went two laps before getting a flat, which was about par for the course on Sunday, September 29, 2013. Seems like nearly everyone flatted. If they ever post the results we’ll link them up.

GoPro Hero3+: Wider, Longer Lasting

by editors on October 1, 2013

Gopro Hero3 PlusUntil the release of the GoPro app (iPhone, Android, and Windows) we’d pretty much thrown in the towel on every figuring out how to use the overly complicated little action POV cameras. With no easy way to review footage or be certain the camera was on and pointed in the right direction, we left the GoPros to the professional video guys (and the genius kids). The free GoPro app has changed all that.

Now, with the iPhone app connected to the camera, reviewing shots, grabbing photos and video for Instagram, and setting the cameras functions is as easy as flipping a few slider bars on our phone. The GoPro camera is now simply an amazing image gathering extension to our iPhone. Today, as GoPro has announced that the Hero3 has been upgraded to the Hero3+, we’ve become even bigger fans.

So what’s the word on the new rig? The Hero3+ camera is the same size as the Hero3, but features a 30 percent increase in battery life, faster WIFI (four times faster) and a new lens for sharper video and stills. They’ve also added a new “SuperView” video mode that is even wider that before. And when the Hero3+ is used with the new GoPro waterproof housing the total rig is reportedly 20 percent lighter. If you’ve put off buying a GoPro because you didn’t want to deal with the details, worry no more. With the free GoPro Studio 2.0 editing app for Mac and Windows grabbing great video and mashing it down into a quality edit has never been easier.
