Smith Overtake Wins Red Dot Award

by editors on June 25, 2015

The Smith Overtake (currently our favorite race helmet) just won a 2015 Red Dot Award which is a pretty big deal.

Following the phenomenal success of the Forefront all-mountain helmet, the brand was recently honored again for its holistic approach to product design with the prestigious international 2015 Red Dot Award for the new Overtake cycling helmet. With almost 5,000 entries from 56 countries, the Red Dot Award – bestowed by the Design Zentrum Nordrhein Westfalen in Essen, Germany – is the largest and most recognized product competition in the world.

Good to know we have an award winning helmet, especially one made with a material that absorbs 30% more energy than traditional EPS foam helmets. Smith Offers Protection Reinvented in 2015 Helmet Assortment
New Overtake Helmet Wins Coveted Red Dot Design Award

Today’s athletes are going faster, farther, and more aggressively than their predecessors. To meet their challenges, Smith has developed protection reinvented through its collection of bike and snow helmets that exceed safety standards and surpass performance expectations.

Following the phenomenal success of the Forefront all-mountain helmet, the brand was recently honored again for its holistic approach to product design with the prestigious international 2015 Red Dot Award for the new Overtake cycling helmet. Drawing from the brand’s Four Pillars of Design ethos, Smith is consciously addressing its helmet ideation with a focus on protection from low speed, high speed, rotational, and multi-impact forces. Utilizing new materials and innovative design methods, Smith is going above and beyond the norm of today’s international helmet regulations by developing multiple solutions that improve energy absorption, aerodynamics, ventilation and overall protection. Through the use of AEROCORE™ construction featuring Koroyd®, EPP foam for multi-impact crashes and the addition of MIPS® liners for multi-rotational forces, Smith has created an incomparable collection of headwear protection for high performance thrill seekers.

Available at retail now, the Overtake offers best-in-class protection, premium aerodynamics and maximum ventilation at a mere 250 grams. Unlike traditional helmet designs, the Overtake utilizes Koroyd® materials that provide a significantly increased venting surface for focused airflow, while absorbing 30% more energy than traditional EPS foam. Its use also dramatically reduces the profile of the helmet, compliant with Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) design, adding to its aerodynamic benefits. Additional features include 21 optimized vents for balanced aerodynamic performance without compromising ventilation, Smith’s VaporFit™ dial-operated 360 adjustable fit system, and ultimate sunglass integration. Select color ways of the Overtake also feature multi-directional impact protection system (MIPS) linings to reduce the rotational forces to the brain. Smith helmets are created to absorb direct impacts very efficiently and when combined with MIPS, they absorb oblique forces better by allowing a small rotation of the outer shell relative to the liner.
