As hardmen and women by the hundreds struggled across the finished line on Sunday afternoon, April 24, 2016, it was obvious that the 5th Annual Belgian Waffle Ride was the toughest yet. With 146 miles of body pounding, mind bending terrain (including 41 miles of dirt and 13,000 feet of climbing) it is no wonder that this year’s event was won by Jelly Belly’s Josh Berry, a professional cyclist with experience from some real Belgian classics.

“I’d heard about the BWR, but it was even better than I expected,” said Berry, professional cyclist for team Jelly Belly p/b Maxxis. “These events are for the riders, and it’s great to have challenging rides where just finishing is an accomplishment. Not everyone can go race in Europe, and this gives people in North America a taste of something hard, but available to everyone. The mix of dirt and hills really suited me and made for a super fun day out there. I hope to be back next year.”

On the women’s side international cyclo-cross star, Amanda “Panda” Nauman (pictured above) dominated the field to beat defending women’s champion Rhonda Quick by just over 12 minutes.

Belgian Waffle Ride Survival Camp

by editors on October 14, 2015

Title-Image

Few cyclists this side of the pro peloton can simply show up and power out 140 miles of brutality without at least a little training. In light of this the organizers of the world famous Belgian Waffle Ride have teamed up with Source Endurance for an official BWR Survival Camp in sunny San Diego the weekend of January 15-18, 2016.

This camp will give brave souls (and those looking to take their bikes out of the basement) an exclusive, guided, sneak preview of the 2016 BWR Course. All BWR Survival Campers will be treated as the professionals they are, with follow cars, soigneurs, domestiques, and lead out men. The time off and on the bike will be amazing! Friday will begin with some leg openers so those who arrive early can get themselves loosened up. Then we’ll have an official 2016 BWR Route unveiling for camp attendees. On Saturday we’ll preview 60% of the 2016 BWR course and Sunday we’ll ride the other 40%. Monday will be an optional ride for any campers that still have legs. We’ll head out along the coast, turning inland gravel and grit before returning home.

Honestly, the camp sounds like a lot more fun than riding the BWR itself. Something to think about. For more info, please follow the jump or click here for all the details.

Save The Date: 2016 Belgian Waffle Ride

by editors on September 16, 2015

Bwr 2016The fifth running of the Belgian Waffle Ride will go down April 23-24, 2016 in San Marcos, California. Organizers say this will be the largest cycling extravaganza in Belgian Waffle Ride history, and participation numbers will be capped at 1,200 of the best from all over, including Olympians; World, National and State champions; professional and amateur cyclists; and surf, motocross and bike industry luminaries.

“The Belgian Waffle Ride presented by SPY was created as an homage to the storied history of bike racing in Belgium—a wonderful country considered to be the epicenter of the hardest one-day bike races in the world,” says Michael Marckx, CDO of Creative Disruption and creator of the event. “A tribute to the beautiful—and equally grueling—races staged in Belgium during the early spring, this year’s route will once again be different than all of the previous years with some new and sinuous gravel, dirt, and rocky sections, and more climbing than rural Belgium could offer, promising more fun, more pain and more opportunity for excuses than ever before. We hope to have at least 14 dirt sections, more than 11,000 feet of climbing and headwinds no matter which direction you ride.”
