2019 USAC CX Nationals

Bikeistan correspondent Miki Vuckovich travelled to Lakewood, Washington for an eye-opening look at the 2019 Cyclocross Nationals. He saw the course as a racer, spectator, and journalist and brought it all back for us.

Today’s Sacramento course took the 133 world-class cyclists on a 85.7-mile jaunt including a crossing of the iconic Tower Bridge leading into three 2.2-mile laps around Capitol Park to the finish line in the shadow of the Capitol Building. Team Dimension Data for Qhubeka’s Mark Cavendish (GBR) came away with a hard-earned victory after an epic sprinter showdown, claiming his tenth all-time Amgen Tour of California stage win, second only to Sagan who holds the race record with 15 after taking Stages 1 and 4 this week.

With thousands of fans lining the streets of Santa Rosa, Team KATUSHA’s star sprinter Alexander Kristoff (NOR) catapulted to a stage win, his eighth of the season, by a rim over all-time Amgen Tour of California stage win record holder Peter Sagan (SVK) of Tinkoff, who had spent much of the 109.1-mile day in a breakaway.

2016 ATOC Stage 6

The name of the game was “fast” in Folsom today as the 140 men competing in the 2016 Amgen Tour of California raced the clock in their individual time trial event, with Australian Rohan Dennis (BMC Racing Team) recording the fastest time.

2016 ATOC Stage 5

After a long day in the breakaway as the peloton cruised from Lodi to South Lake Tahoe, Cannondale Pro Cycling Team’s Toms Skujiņš (LAT) led a group of three out ahead of the leaders, up the mountains where elevations approached 8,600 feet at the apex, and over the finish line at Heavenly Mountain Resort.

2016 ATOC Stage 4

World Champion Peter Sagan (SVK) of Tinkoff has claimed his 15th all-time Amgen Tour of California stage win after a long and hilly ride northward on one of the most scenic and iconic stretches of California roadway, Highway 1, through Monterey County. “It was hard, but good,” said Sagan, when asked about today’s stage. “I’m very happy for my other teammates, and I’m very happy to have won.” At 133.6 miles, the 2016 race’s longest stage began in Central Coast’s charming Morro Bay. The peloton of 133 faced undulating hills much of the day with a total of 8,500 feet of climbing during the only south-to-north route along Highway 1 in 11 years of the race.

The leader jersey changed hands for the third time in three days at the 2016 Amgen Tour of California, with Etixx – Quick-Step’s Julian Alaphilippe (FRA) clutching the Queen Stage victory with a determined push up the final steeply sloped meters of Gibraltar Road in Santa Barbara County. The 23 year-old French rider who won last year’s Mount Baldy stage and placed second overall, just three seconds from top finisher Peter Sagan (Tinkoff), has clearly found California climbs to his liking.

2016 Belgian Waffle Ride

The Belgian Waffle Ride has become a right of passage for serious Southern California cyclists and this year's 146 miles of body pounding, mind bending terrain (including 41 miles of dirt and 13,000 feet of climbing) put everyone to the test.

2014 Belgian Waffle Ride

Called "The Country's Most Unique Cycling Event" the Spy Belgian Waffle Ride pits 500 cyclist against 135 miles of pavement, dirt, gravel, and sand with 11,000 feet of climbing thrown in for good measure. It all goes down in San Diego, California's beautiful North County. This year's event was held April 27, 2014 and looked a little like this.

Outdoor Expo/Interbike 2013

We hit up the 2013 Outdoor Expo on Interbike to check in on all the latest bicycles and gear. We spent most of the time bombing the Bootleg Canyon trails and very little gathering info. But here is a little of who and what we saw.

Interbike 2012

After two amazing days in the desert of Outdoor Demo we went indoors to explore a whole new flavor of biking wonderland. These are a few of the things we saw while we stumbled blindly through the miles and miles of bikes.

Outdoor Demo 2012

Each year in the days before Interbike, those who ride gather in Boulder City, Nevada for Outdoor Demo. A gathering of people and bikes that is a beauty to behold. Check it out.
