Belgian Waffle Ride Survival Camp

by editors on October 14, 2015

Title-Image

Few cyclists this side of the pro peloton can simply show up and power out 140 miles of brutality without at least a little training. In light of this the organizers of the world famous Belgian Waffle Ride have teamed up with Source Endurance for an official BWR Survival Camp in sunny San Diego the weekend of January 15-18, 2016.

This camp will give brave souls (and those looking to take their bikes out of the basement) an exclusive, guided, sneak preview of the 2016 BWR Course. All BWR Survival Campers will be treated as the professionals they are, with follow cars, soigneurs, domestiques, and lead out men. The time off and on the bike will be amazing! Friday will begin with some leg openers so those who arrive early can get themselves loosened up. Then we’ll have an official 2016 BWR Route unveiling for camp attendees. On Saturday we’ll preview 60% of the 2016 BWR course and Sunday we’ll ride the other 40%. Monday will be an optional ride for any campers that still have legs. We’ll head out along the coast, turning inland gravel and grit before returning home.

Honestly, the camp sounds like a lot more fun than riding the BWR itself. Something to think about. For more info, please follow the jump or click here for all the details.

Save The Date: 2016 Belgian Waffle Ride

by editors on September 16, 2015

Bwr 2016The fifth running of the Belgian Waffle Ride will go down April 23-24, 2016 in San Marcos, California. Organizers say this will be the largest cycling extravaganza in Belgian Waffle Ride history, and participation numbers will be capped at 1,200 of the best from all over, including Olympians; World, National and State champions; professional and amateur cyclists; and surf, motocross and bike industry luminaries.

“The Belgian Waffle Ride presented by SPY was created as an homage to the storied history of bike racing in Belgium—a wonderful country considered to be the epicenter of the hardest one-day bike races in the world,” says Michael Marckx, CDO of Creative Disruption and creator of the event. “A tribute to the beautiful—and equally grueling—races staged in Belgium during the early spring, this year’s route will once again be different than all of the previous years with some new and sinuous gravel, dirt, and rocky sections, and more climbing than rural Belgium could offer, promising more fun, more pain and more opportunity for excuses than ever before. We hope to have at least 14 dirt sections, more than 11,000 feet of climbing and headwinds no matter which direction you ride.”

Registration is now open for the third annual “extremely challenging Spring Classic event” more commonly referred to as The SPY Belgian Waffle Ride scheduled for April 26-27, 2014 in beautiful Carlsbad, California.

“The SPY Belgian Waffle Ride began as an homage to the storied history of bike racing in Belgium—a place long considered to be the epicenter of international professional cycling,” says Michael Marckx, SPY president, CEO, and creator of the event. “A tribute to the beautiful—and equally taxing—rides staged in early spring, this year’s route is different than the previous years with a great deal more gravel, dirt, pavé and climbing than even rural Belgium could offer, promising more fun, more pain and more fatigue than ever before.”

The ride begins at 8 AM on Sunday, April 27, 2014 at Spy’s world headquarters and rolls neutral for 20 miles before things heat up at the 116-miles-to-go mark. The course features what organizers call “a relentless barrage of dirt, mud, single-track and water crossings” with a knee grinding 11,000 feet of climbing. But don’t let that deter you from what has become one of the best days you’ll ever spend on a bike. If you are man (or woman) enough, the click here to register ($125) or follow the jump for the official word from SPY or click here for our coverage from last year’s event (including a full results list). 2014 Spy Belgian Waffle Ride April 27

by editors on November 14, 2013

Bwr 2014

Okay. It appears that when we told you to mark your calendars, save the day, and start training for the 2014 running of the Spy Belgian Waffle Ride someone at BWR headquarters didn’t realize that April 20, 2014 was actually Easter Sunday. Not exactly a great day for a 200k+ “Hell Of The North County” race. So, organizers have pushed the event back to April 27, 2014. But it’s still starting at Spy’s World Headquarters in Carlsbad, California.

Be ready for over 10,000 vertical feet of knee blasting climbs, dirt roads, creek crossing, river fording, and bone jarring, frame cracking descents all while winding through San Diego, California’s beautiful, yet perilous North County region. You have been warned. More info as it arrives.

Spy’s Belgian Waffle Ride Brings The Pain

by editors on April 17, 2013

Spy-Optic-Ride

For those who watched Swiss cyclist Fabian Cancellara win the 2013 Tour of Flanders and Paris Roubiax (back to back) and thought maybe they’d like to test themselves against 200 plus kilometers of cycling hell, the Spy Belgian Waffle Ride held in Carlsbad, California, is the perfect race.

The 2013 Spy BWR, held April 7, (the same day as Paris Roubiax), pitted 360 cyclists against some of the steepest, wettest, and rockiest roads and dirt trails in Southern California. And that was after loading everyone up with a huge waffle breakfast.

Modeled after Europe’s gnarly one-day Spring Classic races, the Spy BWR offered those who dared to challenge the course an opportunity to test their strengths in a variety of different terrain, while at the same time raising money for the Challenged Athletes Foundation.

The 130-mile “hell of the North (County)” course began under overcast skies at Spy Optic’s headquarters in Carlsbad and wound its way through Carlsbad, Oceanside, Bonsall, Valley Center, Escondido, and San Elijo before ending, six-plus hours later, back at company headquarters.
