The Bicycle Bombers Of Londonderry

by editors on September 24, 2012

Aleqm5Iuucempkdep-KleuhmrjxcdceowaDissident republicans in Ireland apparently attached a bomb to a bicycle as part of a plan to kill police officers in Londonderry, Ireland, according to a story in the UKPress. Apparently, that whole thing isn’t over yet.

The device was set up to explode in a follow-up operation after a pipe bomb was found just yards away in a holdall close to the city’s main council offices beside the River Foyle, but the timing mechanism malfunctioned and the device failed to go off. . . Volunteers belonging to the Foyle search and rescue team found the first device inside the holdall left on railings beside a riverside walkway. They believed the bag belonged to someone who might have jumped into the water after leaving personal possessions behind. A woman looked inside, suspected it was a pipe bomb and alerted police.

Poor bicycle. . .

Bike Gangs Robbing Pedestrians

by editors on September 24, 2012

New Haven, Connecticut has a new enemy: bike gangs. Yes, according to a story on MyFoxNY.com criminals have been using bikes to commit crimes.

Police tell the New Haven Register the bike packs have been roaming the Fair Haven neighborhood, often targeting the large population of undocumented workers that live in the area. . . They say the gangs will roll up to a victim, beat them up and rob them, before riding away.

We’re just guessing on this one, but we bet the gangs aren’t riding carbon, hardtail mountain bikes. BMX maybe?

by editors on September 16, 2012

Bhrjb.Aust.36Boise, Idaho’s Michael Lawrence had a busy spring, according to a story in the Idaho Statesman. Lawrence reportedly stole “as many as 50 bikes in the Boise area” before the local police matched some fingerprints and nailed him down.

Other items recovered including a projector from a Boise elementary school, a bike rack and $9,000 in cash from the sale of stolen bicycles, most of which went to buyers in the Portland, Ore., area.

Cyclist Arrested For Bike Rage

by editors on September 14, 2012

5049135After getting cut off by a mom on her way home, cyclist James A. Berg, 55, of Naperville, Illinois, reportedly took it out on the woman and her car, according to a story on WISAM.com.

A written Naperville police report indicated Berg that afternoon was riding his bicycle east on the 400 block of West Gartner Road when he was passed by a motorist who then made a turn into the driveway of her home. Three children were passengers in the car at the time. . . Berg “believed he was cut off by the driver’s turn and chased her up her driveway to (the) back door, yelling at her while her three children were in the car,” the report stated. Berg then allegedly “slammed (his) bike into the side of the vehicle, causing a dent and scratch.”

Having encounter the “oh, sorry” shrug from many drivers, we know how Mt. Berg felt, but he apparently took it a little too far. According to the story Berg is now facing misdemeanor chargers of “disorderly conduct/breach of peace and criminal damage to property.” That will spoil a ride/

The Bank Robber & His Getaway Bike

by editors on September 10, 2012

0908Arlington Bank RobberA bank robber in Arlington, Washington held up a Key Bank just after noon on Saturday, September 8, 2012 and then fled on his bicycle, according to a story on NWCN.com.

The suspect entered the bank, displayed a large frame pistol and demanded money, several times threatening to shoot the tellers while aiming the firearm at them. . . The suspect then fled the bank with an undisclosed amount of money. . . Surveillance footage showed the suspect fleeing the scene in a northbound direction on the bicycle immediately after the robbery.

Sadly, they didn’t say what kind of bike it was. If it wasn’t carbon, we could make a pretty good guess where the money was going.
